Obituary of Mr. S.A. Janakiram, AFUNPI

AFUNPI conveys with a heavy heart, the sad news of passing away of its former President and President Emeritus Mr. Srinivasa Ayyar Janakiram (UNESCO) at Bangalore, India on 27 April 2024. He was 92.

Mr. Janakiram was fondly addressed as "Jani” by all his friends and colleagues. Mr Janakiram joined UNESCO in Paris in 1967as Travel Officer and subsequently served at UNESCO as Chief of Staff Regulation and Rules. He also served as Principal Officer at UNESCO Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya and as UNESCO Representative in Iraq. He was instrumental in opening UNESCO office in South Africa. Mr. Janakiram was the President of AFUNPI India for ten years (2002-2012). His generous contributions to the association will always be remembered. Mr Janakiram safeguarded the best interests of the AFUNPI members through his interventions with the Pension Office citing the specific situation in India. AFUNPI bestowed Mr. Janakiram with the title of President Emeritus. During this period, he ensured the development of strong working relations with FAFICS and encouraged participation of AFUNPI representatives in its every Council meeting. He was elected as FAFICS Vice President for two terms and also was part of its delegation at the UN Pension Board. Mr. Janakiram assisted Bangladesh with the establishment of the UN retire association AFUNSOB. In recognition of his exemplary services, FAFICS Council proclaimed Mr. Janakiram as Vice President Emeritus. Mr Janakiram will be greatly missed by AFUNPI family, as well as by FAFICS. May his soul rest in peace.

FAFICS has learned from AFUNPI the sad news that Mr. Srinivasa Ayyar Janakiram (fondly known as "Jani") passed away on 27 April 2024.  He was 92.

Following his career with UNESCO, Jani was admired as the President of AFUNPI India for ten years.  He was a strong supporter of FAFICS, developing strong working relations with FAFICS and strong participation of AFUNPI representatives in FAFICS Councils.  He served as a FAFICS Vice-President for two terms and served on the FAFICS delegation to the Pension Board.  In recognition of his exemplary services, the FAFICS Council proclaimed Mr. Janakiram as Vice President Emeritus. He was also instrumental in assisting Bangladesh with the establishment of the UN retiree association, AFUNSOB.

Mr. Janakiram will be greatly missed by FAFICS colleagues and his AFUNPI family.

We have extended our sincerest condolences to Jani's family, through AFUNPI. May his soul rest in peace.
